the samurai loved guns so much that at one point during the sengoku jidai there were more guns in japan than in all of europe at the time. Also im pretty sure the portuguese dude who introduced guns to japan has a statue of him somewhere in Kyushu
Also as for the inaccuracies , the weirdest one is when maximus was captured by arabs in north africa??? Considering it was still berber. If they were simply traders or soldiers in the area it would make some sense considering we have safaitic inscriptions in parts of the empire
btw i was getting into platonism as of lately because of u and when i found out iamblichus was an arab it made me spit out my drink; i never knew these niggas had philosophers before islam
Yeah, most of the late Platonists were like orientals and shit. Porphyry and Iamblichus mainly, but Plotinus was also maybe just a native egyptian and not even Greek. Even if he was Greek it was late enough in history that I doubt he was unadmixed. All of them were very hellenized albeit, but still they were from the middle east. Sallust was Gallo-Roman though. Julian and Proclus were Anatolian Greeks
its very weird, pretty sure it was during philip the arab's reign that Plotinus met and had a disciple named Zethos the Arabian too. Also wasnt Julian half illyrian ? Its funny to me how the tough ilyro-romans managed to control the empire for so long whilst not trusting the italians.
Also, i wanted to get this out of the way but were anatolian greeks just hellenized anatolians? bc i thought the greeks had settlers and such or was it that across the centuries they got admixed with the natives. and would this change really have been that significant? i mean didnt ancient greeks on average have anywhere between 5-20% steppe ancestry with the rest being anatolian farmer ?
Julian’s mother came from the area near Marmara. Probably heavy more European admixed area. I think his fathers side was related to Constantine, so at least part Illyrian
I really enjoyed this movie growing up, but the depiction of Aurelius and the Germans at the beginning has since made it almost unwatchable for me - I just like the action scenes and the setting at this point. The shame is that the era is rife for movie story-telling, but of course, it will never be covered properly... its lucky we even ended up with a movie like the Northman, every new thing seems to suck these days. Gladiator 2 will probably pale in comparison to the first.
There are thousands of great stories from Roman times that are begging to be put on film, but all they film is Marcus Aurelius and Commodus, which is pretty lame story.
I'm ashamed to admit that I considered "Gladiator" the best movie ever. Now, I cringe when I see some scenes. Marcus Aurelius was a bad emperor. He made Commodus co-emperor. Before him, the Empire was prosperous, and emperors chose their successors and adopted them. Not Marcus; he chose his crazy son. The plague didn't help, either.
'Troy, despite its changes to the story of the Iliad, does still feel essentially like the Iliad.'
See I completely disagree. I think it's a really dumb film, shockingly acted and directed, with no sense of the Homeric spirit at all.
'Historical flicks now instead posture themselves as “historically realist” and do their best to make history as gritty and undramatic as possible.'
This is true. The King from 2019 (scrawny ashk Timotheiweieiei Chalamet *IS* 15th century Anglo-Norman hardman Henry V) could one of the most dispiriting films I've ever seen. You're supposed to appreciate it as GriTty ReALIsM but of course it's nearly all heavily fictionalised.
This is the thing though isn't it: midwit lastmen will always appreciate films like it because they're psychologically predisposed and socially conditioned to think the most sordid and least glorious depiction of historical events, and especially of great men, *must* be the most accurate ackchewally.
PS: As you probably guessed, the above brief review is courtesy of Gene Siskel via ouija board.
PPS: I always found Gladiator pretty dumb too (massive disappointment) but I'm gonna try it again.
I think your criticism of Marcus Aurelius is a bit weak, with one of your biggest complaints being that he is so popular. Something being popular is not a valid criticism it is just contrarian. And people failing to interpret Aurelius properly does not invalidate the material. I am not a stoic and its proliferation can be tiresome as people believe it is a self sustaining philosophy, but for a man with unlimited power to be the one who wrote meditations it is an interested element and reflection of humanity that we can genuinely learn from. He was one of the least cool of the 5 good emperors of Rome though, no questions there.
Republicanism is destined to fail because there will always be liberals who will slowly expand suffrage to literally anyone. No matter how small the voting pool is, someone will always think "this isn't real democracy" and convince everyone to liberalize it slowly & slowly. Also republicanism is dripless, donald trump looks like rj cosplaying after seeing charles iii's coronation.
there is this movie, 'centurion,' that i watched back when i was playing for honor. the game was releasing two roman styles characters, a legionnaire style soldier (called centurion) and a gladiator fighter (gladiator). so as pre-celebration of their release, i would watch the movies. anyway, i don't know if 'centurion' is as good as gladiator. it is a last man standing, behind enemy lines style movie ala 'enemy at the gates.' it is about some legionnaires from the 9th legion become lost in pictish scotland when their legion is slaughter. movie is from 2010.
opjrgdwer 90 you can drink my semen. Shut the fuck up. You're obese. You FAT Fuck. Lose some weight. What's it like being 500 pounds over the national avarege? Go sniff paint you brain damaged kicke. I hate "Kingdom of Heaven". It's an anti-Christian anti-Catholic baiting movie, riddled with lies and half-truths. It's a pity because it was well-made and beautiful. It would have been a classic if it were truthful.
Only a modern anti-Christian snowflake could have written that horrible speech. No Crusader would utter such rubbish. And Balian of Ibelin was a good Crusader.

Anatolian Greeks in eastern and central Anatolia yes. Anatolian Greeks in coastal Anatolia no, they have significant Greek pull

A Japanese movie “Ran” have rifles in it. A great version of Shakespeare’s King Lear.
Where are the boobs?

He is massively overrated in modern conversation and this movie might honestly be why though
