I believe that there was at some point a shift between using music to accentuate active activities, to using it to simply fill the void of the mind during passive activities. My best guess would be that this started with radios, especially in cars and homes. Before the radio, if sou wanted music you would have to go out of your way to find a musician. You'd have to either find them in a public space, or contact them and pay them a good penny to perform for you privately. With the radio, all you had to do was move a finger and turn it on. And now the majority of Americans could stop having to pay attention or think during their commute and chores. They could shut off their brain and listen to the latest 50s jazz. Nowadays you don't even need to walk 5 steps to your radio, you don't even have to think of your surroundings! People will just plug their ears and play some music from their phones. In class, in the car, at work, at home; it's constant, and constantly listening to music (especially of the caliber normies engage in) probably has had some negative effects.
Ayup. Music was also supposed to be a spice of life, not people's entire existence. Whites have that in Le emo hypebeasts and blacks have it in rap. Many blacks I know spend their hours sitting in their car with fast food, blasting rap music and scrolling their phones.
